On-Site Landscape Painting

Term:
Summer 2009

Learn the basics of on-site painting in oil or acrylics using spontaneous brush strokes to capture the essence of the beautiful coastal RI landscape.  En Plein Air painting, meaning painting in the open air, or painting directly from nature, is for all levels: beginners to experienced painters.   Painting from life teaches the artist to observe details otherwise lost in photography and to make decisions on the spot as to composition, color and focal interest. By absorbing it all, sight, sound, temperature and atmosphere, we channel those feelings to our paintings and re-create our vision in paint. We will have a guest painter whenever possible. In bad weather we’ll be meeting at SCAA to work on previous paintings and to discuss the great landscape painters of our time.

Linnea has been painting and photographing the landscape for over 30 years.  She has a BFA from URI and is an artist member of the Providence Art Club. She loves to teach and share her enthusiasm for painting with her students. She has also taught workshops at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Mass, and at the Providence Art Club. She has exhibited extensively throughout New England and is currently represented by the Charlestown Gallery among others.

All locations have parking and bathrooms, and all have easy access. On rainy or in-climate weather days, class will meet at the Helme house and have part lecture on landscape painters and part painting. The painting will be either finishing up location paintings or working from photos of those sites.
