Exploring Texture and Design
Using 19th Century Majolica pottery as our inspiration students will go through the process of planning and executing their own take on these intricate antiques forms. Students will learn to sketch out their designs, create their own texture making tools (stamps, sprig molds and textured rollers) and use them to make two specific decorative and functional projects. Other techniques will be incorporated as each project requires.
The first three weeks students and teacher will discuss approaches to decorating two un-ornamented forms, a serving platter and a vase. Each student will sketch out their ideas, decide what texture tools they want to make for their custom designs and make them. During weeks four and five we will be making a platter and ornamenting it. In weeks six and seven we will be making a vase and ornamenting it. Week eight will be dedicated to underglazing and glazing our final pieces.
