Photopolymer Etching
Students will be introduced to the photopolymer etching process (sometimes called Solarplate Etching). The Photopolymer etching process is a greener, safer method of plate making, which does not require the use of acids or solvents. All cleanup is done with vegetable oil.
We will spend much of the first class creating the artwork that will be used to make the plate, since this is the most important step in the process. Students will be guided to form their own artistic expression and exploration. If time permits, instructor will demo creation of a plate—if not, that will be the first item for day 2.
Instructor will prepare transparencies and bring them to 2nd class. After plates are created, Relief and Intaglio inking methods will be explained and demonstrated. At least 3 different methods of applying color to the plate will be demonstrated. This course will help painters and printmakers alike to view their work with new possibilities. Beginners welcome. Students should be able to produce a number of prints, and have plenty of time to explore different aspects of the process. A variety of art books and completed samples of the processes will be available during class to further inspire exploration. Handouts and supplies will be provided so that students can concentrate on art-making rather than note-taking. This course will help painters and printmakers alike to view their work with new possibilities. Materials available through the instructor.
Length of workshop: 2 days; 1st day 4 hours for preparing images, 2nd day 6 hours for making plates and inking/printing. Instructor will provide: laptop for preparing images with students. Instructor will print transparencies at home between 1st and 2nd class.
