This intermediate/advanced throwing and hand building class will explore working with raku clay while using exciting surface-enhancing techniques, glazes, and the unique raku firing process, which merges potters’ skills with the spontaneity of fire and melted glass. Pieces are heated quickly to 1900 degrees and pulled from the kiln glowing orange, crackling the glaze at air contact; when the pot is placed in a chamber with a combustible material and smothered. The result is a carbon black body and crackle throughout the glazed surface. Techniques using feathers, horsehair, and other media create an even greater variety of surface decoration. Black backgrounds with white foregrounds will be experimented with, and the class will also explore the use of copper matte and other glazes unique to the raku firing process.
