Expressive Portraiture
Portraits that have the greatest impact on the viewer are expressive ones, those that evoke feeling. This feeling can be reflected via facial expression -- that "look" in the eyes -- or even by more subtle descriptions as found in the atmosphere surrounding the model. We will explore the various ways we can achieve an expressive portrait in several mediums -- oil, acrylic, and watercolor.
Tom Martino, a plein-air painter who has painted portraits from live models for thirty years, will share his insights regarding:
(1) how to rapidly establish a facial likeness
(2) how to observe the model for clues that will reveal a particular attitude or expression, and
(3) how to bring professional finish to the final painting.
Live models will sit for us. Each student will be asked to contribute $5 toward the model expenses. All skill levels welcome.
