A piece of wood, a knife, a spoon and some watercolor paint. The “Provincetown White Line Print” is a uniquely American art form that grew out of a desire to simplify the traditional Japanese woodblock method. Its origins are now lost in the mists of the past but recent research and discoveries place its invention as early as 1913 around the time of the famous Armory Show in New York City. During this course students will learn the basics of working with a wood block, design issues, carving techniques and special emphasis on the use of watercolor. There will be an ongoing (week to week) commentary about Provincetown’s historical art and literary figures who ultimately shaped much of the American art movement. Brian Larkin’s “black line” hybrid will be introduced as well. There will be group presentations from time to time but the main focus is on individualized interaction between instructor and student.
