After abandoning a decade-long career as a figurative sculptor in 2011, Long began teaching himself to paint on the streets of the French Quarter. While in New Orleans he produced thousands of original acrylic still life paintings to sell in markets and festivals, but by 2017, switched exclusively to painting oil landscapes en plein air and from his extensive photo library (Long frequently traveled coast-to-coast with his family in an RV until 2021.) A dedicated daily painter, he completes several alla prima works per day while drinking copious amounts of espresso.
