Suzi Ballenger has an aesthetic informed by the freedom she has always felt and still feels in the outdoors. This unfettered feeling is revealed in nature, on the farms, gardens, and ocean around her. An unending curiosity for material stimulates her language of hand and craft, believing the fullest expression of a fiber can be realized through observation, repetition, and structure.
“My materials are personified as I work with them. The individual characteristics are enhanced through hand manipulation techniques and conversations between each other. Architecture of form, order/dis-order, movement, substance, and tension are all part of the subjective dialogue and structure. Every fiber has a personality – it is up to us to listen to it.”
