Where are you from, and what do you make?

I am from Marlborough, CT and my husband and I have a vacation home in South Kingstown.

I grew up with an artist mom. She was a wonderful watercolorist, and her artistic influence was great. I dabbled in watercolor but always wanted to try pastel. Twenty years ago, a local art guild offered a pastel class, I attended and loved the medium. Since that initial class I have taken numerous classes and workshops to improve my craft.

What inspires you to create?

In my work I seek to capture the beauty all around us--from farms, beaches and woodlands to flowers, animals and birds. Attracted by shadow and light and the values they represent, my work is distinguished by my use of vibrant colors with soft impressionistic edges.

Which artist outside of your chosen medium has had the most impact on your art? What do they do and in what way do they influence you?

My favorite painter outside my medium is John Singer Sargent. My favorite painting is his “Fumee, d’ Ambre Gris“ (Smoke of Ambergris).

It is large oil on canvas. The whole painting is a study on different values of white and a beautifully drawn and executed piece. It is incredible and I was able to see it live because it is in the permanent collection at the Clark Institute in Williamstown, MA.

As a member of SCAA, what do you like most about us?

The Gallery and wonderful pottery workshop at SCAA is impressive but what is most impressive are the people. Jen, Jason and the staff are so friendly and supportive. They strive to make everyone feel welcome.

Tell us a joke.
