In her own words, "I love being a member of this wonderful community of artists." Lisa joined SCAA in 2023 and won her first award for best abstract at our 96th Members Exhibition. Her beautiful, attention-grabbing paintings have been featured in several of our exhibits since she joined with her husband Paul. Although she now paints pictures, several years ago she owned a decorative painting company in Germantown, Maryland, which involved painting murals, plastering, glazing-- and a lot of sweat and tears! - SCAA
Where are you from, and what do you make?
I am originally from Pawtucket but my husband and I lived for 35 years in the metropolitan DC area. We moved back to Rhode Island during the pandemic and landed in a 225-year-old home in West Warwick, complete with one of the oldest corn cribs in the state. I have explored many mediums including polymer clay, needle felting, and watercolor. Currently, I am focusing on oil and cold wax, in addition to mixed media collage. These mediums usually take the form of abstract landscapes.
How long have you been seriously pursuing art?
Since I moved back to Rhode Island in 2020, I have taken a more serious approach to my art. I now have a wonderful attic studio space in my home and more time to create. With the help of SCAA, where I've been accepted into exhibits, sold a few pieces, and participated in the holiday sale, I have finally gotten my art into the world.
What inspires you to create?
Like most artists, I have an inner need to create. This drives me to try my hand at different mediums and new techniques. Through taking workshops with great artists and watching hundreds of YouTube videos, I feed my curiosity and stay inspired.
Which artist outside of your chosen medium has had the most impact on your art? What do they do and in what way do they influence you?
My yoga instructors. (Is yoga an art form?). Their influence impacted not only the way I feel physically, but also have helped me spiritually. Through my yoga practice I have become more grateful for my creativity and work from a place of joy.
Is there a work of art that has changed your life or how you view the world in some way?
There's a 2 year old boy on Instagram named Laurent Schwartz who paints incredible abstracts. His paintings touch a place in me that strives to be more uninhibited and have a more “go for it” attitude.
As a member of SCAA, what do you like most about us?
I can't say enough about the incredible staff at SCAA. A visit to Helme House is always met with welcoming smiles, encouragement, and fun conversation. My husband and I love being involved in all they have to offer. Thanks to talented staff, events are always well organized and run smoothly. Well done!
Tell us a joke.
So what if I can't spell Armageddon….. it's not the end of the world.
