Michele is new to SCAA, but has made a big impression! A talented artist with an interesting history, she has done a little of everything, from owning 2 Mexican restaurants in Boston, to being a hairdresser on movie sets, to constructing a 250lb, 5' tall cement sculpture that is now on display at a gallery in Yarmouth Port, MA. When Michele isn't painting or sculpting, she is an avid cyclist, biking 60 miles each week, as well as a seamstress and knitter. Since joining SCAA this year, she has already been accepted into multiple exhibitions and even won an award. She is also part of the group exhibition currently on display at DeBlois Gallery until the end of the month. - SCAA

Where are you from, and what do you make?

I grew up in Dighton, MA, and moved to Boston in 1983. I lived in many parts of Boston and Cape Cod until last year, when I moved to East Providence. I’m really loving Rhode Island. I make a lot of useless things (lol) but in my art practice I paint and create sculptures.

What inspires you to create?

Design and storytelling.

Which artist outside of your chosen medium has had the most impact on your art? What do they do and in what way do they influence you?

I am influenced by musicians, photographers, and scientists!

What do they do and in what way do they influence me?

Musicians feed the vibration to physically move my body and mind. Photo journalism influences me with the research and visual stories they tell. Science is the non-visual edge that provokes much of my imagination.

Is there a work of art that has changed your life or how you view the world in some way?

Agnes Martin's work is considered part of the Minimalist movement. She demonstrates incredible simplicity and restraint to the point of a purist. American culture has reached such uber demands that the discipline of practicing minimalism is oddly refreshing. The artist takes on a detached approach, holding back all the adjectives and details only offering the bare minimum to the viewer.

As a member of SCAA, what do you like most about us?

You are approachable! I find that is the biggest way to support artists as a gallery is to be approachable while still maintaining high standards.

Tell us a joke.

Why did the artist go broke?

They kept drawing a blank!
