​I have been painting for over 50 years. I moved to Virginia for several years enjoying a new passion, pursuing a rural lifestyle, farm life and horses. When I moved back to RI and a much more artistic environment I got back to pursuing art. I still have one of my horses but find time for both.

Both my ceramics and printmaking practices heavily involve carving. I print mainly with linoleum cuts, and my favorite method of ceramic surface design is sgraffito.

​I am influenced by nature, current events, and most things that make life interesting. Things that reflect my life experiences and times that have touched me in some way. My inspiration is not always recognized in the final result.

​The Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic resonates with my thinking; that there is beauty in imperfection and an honoring of the natural cycle of life. I am drawn to things, both organic and inorganic, that show the passage of time. Wear, damage, erosion can add interest, depth and complexity.

I brake for silos and smokestacks! Having always been curious for subjects that have a backstory, I am drawn to visually capture transition; decaying, abandoned buildings, obsolete machines and artifacts left behind.

Although I have thrown on the wheel, my preferred construction method for my sculptures is hand building, using slabs and coils, and three elementary tools, a fork, various serrated metal tools, and a 30-year-old homemade paddle.

The places featured in my work are well-known to those living near the coast. The beaches, inlets, bay, saltwater ponds, and lakes are major features of my work. In particular, the changing atmospheric conditions are part of these studies.

A great deal of my inspiration comes from science fiction, fantasy, and comic art. Indeed, the original “Star Wars” from 1977 was the first movie I ever saw in a theater, so you can imagine the impact it had on me!

I draw every day no matter where I am, in the studio or out and about. On trains, planes, and automobiles, I always have a sketchbook and pencil on me.  Creativity for me is directly tied to how I see.

In my work I seek to capture the beauty all around us--from farms, beaches and woodlands to flowers, animals and birds. Attracted by shadow and light and the values they represent, my work is distinguished by my use of vibrant colors with soft impressionistic edges.

​The flora and fauna of living in two beautiful states gives me my inspiration. I enjoy taking notice of the ever changing colors, patterns and textures that surround me everyday and it gives me something to reflect on.

People frequently speak of talent as the basis of good artwork. I disagree with that statement. At RISD, I had two professors who taught me how to work hard and, more importantly, how to stop thinking and SEE. From these habits, my work has evolved to a place that I am gratified.

I took my first real art class at the Art Students League of New York, probably in 2002 or 2003. It was a portrait painting class with live models, so I certainly jumped right into the deep end! However, I didn't get serious about creating art until about 5 years ago.

Both the natural and manmade beauty of New England inspires me. I am drawn to the seasonal changes of New England land and seascapes, and in particular the seasonal changes in light, color, tone, and mood which I strive to convey in my paintings.

I am primarily a mixed media assemblage artist. Combining a variety of media and interesting found objects to create 3-dimensional vignettes with the goal of telling a story is an all-consuming passion for me.

I didn't discover SCAA until I took up pottery about a decade ago. I never realized what a treasure I was missing. The classes are enlightening, and the community atmosphere is inspiring.
