Introduction to Mixed Media Assemblage Workshop | September 28
In this workshop, we’ll explore the shadow box constructions of artist Joseph Cornell. We’ll study his evocative arrangements and analyze his ability to create depth in a shallow space utilizing a variety of media and found objects. We’ll learn composition, layering and gluing techniques leading us to a successful shadow box assemblage.
Students will receive a shadow box exactly like the one featured in the photos of this class description. To plan your assemblage options, please refer to the Materials List. Students will collect collage papers, photos, ephemera and objects both interesting and personal to assemble. Also for the first class, students should have a preliminary idea in mind for their assemblage - perhaps it is a personal memory, an emotion, or an interesting narrative that could be explored in this fascinating art form. The goal is to complete a finished construction by the end of the workshop.
Please bring $10 on the day of class for materials fee that covers the cost of the shadow box. To better plan your assemblage piece, the box can be picked up prior to the beginning of class from SCAA during open hours Wednesdays-Sundays from 1-5pm. Materials List.
