We have started a collaboration with local high schools in a 'Student Exhibit Series' project. In opening the professional
exhibition process to students, we hope to raise a greater appreciation of the arts for younger people.
We believe that art is made by and for all ages and that creative expression unites all generations.

Open Juried Exhibition I Regan Byers Westerly High School Grade 12 |
Reagan Byers is a senior at Westerly High School and has attended the Westerly School district her whole life. She began working with clay during her junior year of high school, and fell in love with throwing on the wheel. Carving into each piece is her favorite part of the art making process, because of how calming it is. The glaze of this particular vessel was chosen specifically to see how it would react in relationship to the texture created by the carving. This piece shows the unique style of her art, which is inspired by nature.

There is a strong self-possessed drive I find within myself to generate unique art from a pure subconscious perspective. Initiating from self-directed curiosity, art has become my incentive, my passion, and most importantly the impulse to attain my highest aspirations. Through each process of creating a new aspect of myself becomes understood, and with that continuously follows my desire for artistic exploration. Art is my creative outlet and I hope to share it with the world someday.

Madeliene Carret South Kingstown High School Grade 12 |
I have always found myself interested in film and filmmaking, especially in old horror movies. The way that filmmakers play with lighting, sets the mood, builds atmosphere, and heightens tension. These cinematic films made me take notice of how lighting could be used to enhance a scene and take it to the next level photographically.

Into the Woods
Acrylic & Charcoal |
I am unsure as to when my passion for painting surfaced, but I have always felt it within my bones. Creating artwork is the most beneficial and personal diary of mine, I can release tensions from the outside world and translate them into an unexpected, anxiety-inducing symbol or story. I am able to freely create without the boundaries within our physical world, without the expectations of reality. Life has no blueprint, and nothing truly has a place. I want to make the unknown, known and the unseen, seen. Each painting I create is a facet of my imagination while toying with a modern, social behavior, belief or system, all for the audience’s reaction.
“Into the Woods” is an immersive, shock-factor artwork. This piece is meant to emotionally and mentally impact the viewer by usage of colors and patterns. The bright reds and dark blues creates contrast and leads the viewer’s eyes toward the main figure. The immersiveness of this piece also allows for open interpretation as to what would happen next. |

I create art based on the natural world. My main focus is painting. Painting to me is like opening a portal to a different world; you can make new colors, mix things up and create whatever you want. I still have a lot to learn, but art is my passion and I will continue to create.

Earthwalker Sunflower
Terra Cotta Clay, Wheel Thrown |
I have been working with clay for the past three years. During freshman year I took an Introduction to Ceramics class and have taken a clay class every opportunity since. I tried wheel throwing my second year and have continued with throwing for the past two years I have been working with clay for the past three years. During freshman year I took an Introduction to Ceramics class and have taken a clay class every opportunity since. I love the calming and satisfying feeling of centering the piece and raising the walls. In a busy school day, it is nice to have a break to work with clay and let my creative side come out. This is an Earthwalker sunflower, one that has dark pink petals and a dark maroon center. The sunflower’s petals are opening and the flower’s development from a bud is shown. This represents the seasons changing, the maternal nature of spring. My piece shows life.

Dr. Suess’s Tea Set
Terra Cotta Clay, Wheel Thrown |
I started taking clay my freshman year of high school. I fell in love with ceramics because of the calmness and relaxation I feel when working with clay, especially on the wheel. I used terra cotta clay and underglazes for this project. The teapot and mug set reminds me of my childhood, as it resembles a Dr. Seuss book that I used to read and enjoy as a child. The curvature of the piece reminds me of something that’s loose, fluid, and fun like the poems of Dr. Seuss. When I started to think about how I wanted to design my piece, I really wanted to accentuate a playful movement which could capture its uniqueness. When deciding what colors to use, I knew I wanted to use colors that contrast which would enhance the feeling of fluidity throughout the piece.

Leon Brown
Westerly High School Grade 12 |
My name is Leon Brown, a Westerly High School senior and ceramic artist. Throughout high school, art was never really my strong point, but after taking a pottery class last year, I fell in love with the satisfaction I experienced when tapping into my creativity and working with clay. Now in my senior year, I have chosen to pursue this passion further and have incorporated it into my Senior Exhibition project. The piece I chose to display in the Earthworks 46th Open Juried Clay Annual is one I am most proud of from my collection. Pottery and ceramics have become my passion - one that I hope to evolve into a career in the future.

Art from the Workshops
Prout
High School Students |
This exhibit launched our new initiative designed to encourage young artists to express and display their creativity through community partnerships with our local high schools. We were happy to host Prout student artwork in our small gallery in January of 2019.
The exhibit was curated by Kristen Rich and Michael Elson, Prout High School art teachers. Kristen Rich said, "At the Prout School, we believe that our creativity is truly a gift to be nurtured and developed. Visual art plays an important role in educating the whole person, and we offer a wide variety of creative experiences for our students." |
