Handbuilding 101 - September 18 WAIT LIST ONLY info@southcountyart.org
In this class, students will learn the nuances of working with ceramic clay while learning the fundamental techniques to successfully create vessels and structures using the hand-building method of construction.
We will briefly cover coils and pinch pots, with heavy emphasis on slab construction techniques; different ways to make a slab, determining appropriate ‘stages of dryness’ of the clay for construction, templates vs free form patterns, slump & hump (drape) molds, basics of ‘scoring and slipping’; how and when to decorate the clay using slips, underglazes, carving. One of the main challenges to hand-building with clay is determining the best stage of wetness to build with - then managing the drying process.
Students will learn basic/simple glazing techniques to complete their projects. This technique-heavy class will provide a hand-building newcomer with fundamental skills; and provide a review of foundational skills for those who need to revisit hand-building artistry.
