Basic Handbuilding | September 9
In Handbuilding Basics, students will learn the fundamental techniques to successfully create vessels using a variety of hand-building methods of construction. Students will be working on a different project each week, making small sided dishes, cups, vases, trinket dish sets, and bowls. Decorating using stamping, slips, underglazes, and carving will be covered. Simple glazing techniques will be covered so students can put the finishing touches on their projects in the last weeks of this class.
Students will learn the following techniques:
- Rolling out slabs of clay
- The basics of scoring and slipping in construction
- Templates and free form pattern making
- Creating texture
- Using slump & hump (drape) molds
- Managing the drying process
- Ornamentation using stamps, slips, underglazes, and carving
This technique-heavy class will provide a hand-building newcomer with fundamental skills and provide a review of foundational skills for those who would like to refresh their hand-building knowledge.
