Exploring Pastel: Building the Foundation | In-Person | April 27
This class introduces the virtues and versatility of soft pastel as a painting medium, and the techniques and methods used to produce the characteristics that pastel is particularly known for: brilliant color, vibrant light, and matte surface effects from delicate and velvety to bold and textural. The class is a comprehensive introduction designed to quickly build knowledge, skill, and confidence in handling this beautiful medium for beginners and those who are looking for a refresher. Over the course of the class we will cover the pros and cons of different surfaces/papers and materials; elements of composition, color, edges, and value; working methods, including straight and underpainting approaches and methods of mark-making; and the all-important skill of evaluating and adjusting your work as you go. There will be a short demo in one of these areas in each class, followed by a mix of fun exercises to practice techniques; in-class painting time; and review and assessment of our efforts. Each student will receive individualized attention as they work.
